On the 8.7.2013 the Labour Minister, Zeta Emilianidou, issued several decrees relating to the extension of shop working hours in Cyprus. Up until now only shops in designated “tourist zones” were allowed to stay open later and do business on Sundays. Other shops were only entitled to remain open for business between certain hours.
As a result of the Minister’s decision, as from the 12.07.2013 until the 12.10.2013 (inclusive) shops will now be entitled to extend their opening hours. The Minister’s decision in affect renders the whole of Cyprus as a “tourist zone”. Shops will now be allowed to remain and stay open from 5am until 10pm from Mondays to Saturdays (including Wednesday) and from 9am until 9pm on Sundays.
It should be noted that the measure for extending shop opening hours is voluntary and store owners may choose the opening hours for their premises within those permitted. Additionally, the legislation regarding retail employees working hours are not affected by the decrees.
