A digital nomad refers to a person who is to perform their job remotely using digital technology from anywhere in the world.
The Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa Scheme allows such persons who are non-EU nationals and either work for an employer registered abroad, outside of the Republic of Cyprus, or are self-employed and can use digital technology to provide services for companies or clients located abroad, to reside temporarily in Cyprus.
The scheme was launched in Cyprus launched in January 2022 and is part of a cohort of new immigration and business initiatives. The aim is to attract foreign investment, talent and innovation to this bourgeoning tech hub.
To be eligible to obtain a Cyprus digital nomad visa applicants must in addition be able to prove that they have monthly income of at least €3,500, after the deduction of contributions and taxes, to be able to support themselves whilst living in Cyprus.
Individuals granted with a Digital Nomad residence permit will have the right to stay in Cyprus for up to one year, with the possibility to renew for two more years.
In addition, their family members can also stay in Cyprus for the same period and be granted with a residence permit that expires at the same time as the permit of the individual. However, during their stay in Cyprus, the
family members are not allowed to provide dependent work or to engage in any kind of economic activity in the country.
It should be noted that if they spend more than 183 days in Cyprus during the same calendar year, then they will be considered Cyprus tax residents and be eligible to several tax benefits. Those that spend less than 184 days in Cyprus but over 60 days, can still be considered Cyprus tax residents if they meet some additional criteria.
The Cyprus government is keen to transform Cyprus into a digital hub for nomadic entrepreneurs, tech entrepreneurs, shipping and pharma companies. The digital ecosystem is being upgraded, 5G networks are being expanded across the island and the previous bureaucratic government processes being updated and the use of paper and facsimile for applications being rendered a part of history.
