An amendment to the Law on the Promotion and Protection of Breastfeeding (Law 21(I)/2018) was passed on the 12.06.2026 by the House of Representatives.
The stated purpose of this legalisation is to amend the Law on the Promotion and Protection of Breastfeeding in order to establish the obligation to create rooms for breastfeeding and/or expressing and storing breast milk in workplaces, as well as the creation of such rooms in public spaces.
More specifically, the law aims to address the existing legislative gap by introducing provisions regarding the following:
(a) The obligation of every employer, except for those whose workplace is 50 square meters or smaller, to provide a room for breastfeeding and/or expressing and storing breast milk. The breastfeeding room may be either permanent or temporary. A temporary room is to be provided following notification by the affected breastfeeding employee and for as long as necessary.
(b) The obligation to create breastfeeding and/or milk expression rooms in designated types of public spaces that serve and/or are frequented by the general public, including public buildings.
(c) The designation of responsible officers for monitoring the implementation of the Law and any Regulations issued under it in workplaces and designated public spaces.
(d) The determination of penalties and offenses for non-compliance with the provisions of the Law and the Regulations.
The Law provides that employers who are found to be in breach of any of the provisions of the Law shall be held liable and, in case of conviction, to a fine prescribed by the Maternity Protection Law (instead of the standard fines).
